ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has scheduled urgent meetings for Monday, 24 November, and Tuesday, 25 November 2025, in a last-ditch move to stop the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from launching a fresh nationwide strike.
The meetings are convened by the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee following the expiration of ASUU’s one-month ultimatum on Saturday.
A senior NEC member of ASUU, speaking anonymously, accuses the government of employing delay tactics. “They have convened a meeting for Monday and Tuesday. I believe it’s a delay tactic. They are trying to delay us from taking action,” the official says.
He adds that ASUU will hold its own NEC meeting afterwards to determine “the next line of action.”
ASUU had suspended its two-week warning strike on 22 October and granted the government a one-month window to address pending demands. The union warned it would resume industrial action without notice if meaningful progress was not recorded.
Key demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU–FG agreement, settlement of outstanding salaries and earned academic allowances, and the release of revitalisation funds for public universities.
However, Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa insists the government has met most of the union’s demands.
Speaking earlier at the State House, he says: “The President has said he doesn’t want ASUU to go on strike, and we are doing everything humanly possible to ensure that our students stay in school.”
He adds that negotiations are ongoing and that further concessions are being secured to stabilise the academic calendar.
ASUU is expected to announce its final decision after its NEC meeting later this week.
