KEBBI, Nigeria – Tension grips Kebbi State after armed bandits abduct 25 female students from the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area.
The attackers strike on Sunday night, operating without resistance and spreading panic across the community.
Sources say the gunmen first confront and kill the school’s Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, who reportedly dies while attempting to protect the students.
Residents describe the assault as swift and terrifying. “People were shouting and running. The bandits moved freely,” a witness says, recalling the fear that engulfed the community.
The Kebbi State Police Command confirms the abduction, with its spokesperson, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, stating that 25 schoolgirls are missing.
The state government dispatches the Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Tafida, to the scene to assess the situation on behalf of Governor Nasir Idris, who is currently out of the state. “The deputy governor is on his way to know the exact situation,” says Ahmed Idris, spokesperson to the governor in a statement on Monday.
Community leaders and parents gather in large numbers, offering prayers for the slain vice principal and pleading for the safe return of the abducted girls. Local volunteers have begun supporting security agents by providing intelligence on possible escape routes.
The attack intensifies concerns over school safety in northern Nigeria, where students have repeatedly been targeted by armed groups. Analysts warn that inadequate security coverage in remote areas enables such incidents.
Authorities have yet to release details on negotiation efforts or contact with the kidnappers.
