UYO, Nigeria – Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno has declared a state of emergency in the health sector, unveiling sweeping reforms to accelerate access to quality care.
The decision followed a review of the administration’s healthcare roadmap under its ARISE agenda.
Information Commissioner, Aniekan Umanah disclosed the move after the State Executive Council meeting held at Government House, Uyo.
“The emergency will expand medical facilities, upgrade training institutions, and recruit 2,000 health workers,” Umanah announced.
The government approved the reopening of the recruitment portal for new staff, waiving the voter identity card requirement.
Retired medical professionals will also be engaged on contract, while training schools across the state will be upgraded.
The council also established an Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee to oversee prompt and effective implementation of emergency measures.
In addition, the executive proposed a ₦695 billion supplementary budget, raising the state’s total 2025 budget from ₦995 billion to ₦1.65 trillion.
Umanah said ₦125.66 billion is earmarked for recurrent expenditure and ₦569.33 billion for capital projects.
“The budget will provide for the new minimum wage, address flood control, inflation-hit projects, and fund new infrastructure across the state,” he explained.
Funds will also support Ibom CNG Mass Transit buses, housing estates, agriculture initiatives, and the ARISE Shopping City project.
Capital allocations include acquiring a new aircraft for Ibom Air and renovating the House of Assembly complex, reinforcing the state’s commitment to infrastructure and healthcare reform.
