Students watch PSI Nigeria’s My Red Flower film promoting menstrual health awareness
ABUJA, Nigeria – Population Services International (PSI) Nigeria has launched two audiovisual materials using storytelling in local languages to promote menstrual health, challenge stigma and inspire open conversations among young people and communities.
In a statement on Friday, PSI said the short films — My Red Flower and Menstruation with Dignity — were developed under its Menstrual Health and Hygiene–No Wahala (MH-NoW) project.
The productions, available in Pidgin English and Hausa with English subtitles, aim to reach diverse audiences and break linguistic barriers.
“The goal is to use culturally relevant storytelling to make menstruation simple, relatable and free of stigma,” the organisation stated. “Through imagery and dialogue, we promote menstrual equity and dignity for all.”
The films were premiered at Government Secondary School, Akwanga, Nasarawa State, and Goretti Girls College, Akwa Ibom State, where students, teachers and menstrual health advocates engaged in discussions after the screenings.
A student in Akwanga said: “The video helped me overcome the fear and shame around menstruation.”
Similarly, Goretti Girls College principal, Mrs Eno Ekpo, said, “It’s inspiring to see menstruation discussed so freely. It should no longer be treated as taboo.”
