ABUJA, Nigeria – Secondary schools in Nigeria employing unqualified teachers will lose accreditation to host major national exams from 2027, the Federal Ministry of Education has warned.
The directive, issued in a circular dated 11 September 2025, requires compliance with Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) standards.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said: “Accreditation for WASSCE, NECO, NABTEB, and SAISSCE will henceforth depend on TRCN-certified teachers.”
Schools must ensure at least 75 per cent compliance by 2026, with full compliance due in 2027. Failure means losing approval as examination centres.
To aid transition, non-education graduates teaching for more than a year may register for professional courses at the National Teachers’ Institute, qualifying them for TRCN registration.
State governments have been urged to raise awareness and support teachers to prevent disruption of examinations.
