LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government is intensifying efforts to curb its worsening waste management challenges by engaging Private Sector Partnership (PSP) operators in a strategic meeting to boost efficiency across the city.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Wednesday after meeting with the 57 local council and LCDA chairmen in Ikeja.
“We want to know the gaps and collaborate effectively with council chairmen, who are closest to residents,” Wahab said.
He expressed concern that several PSP operators have fallen short in timely waste collection, causing environmental strain across the metropolis. “The state is overwhelmed,” he admitted, noting that the upcoming dialogue with operators would help identify operational bottlenecks.
“The feedback shows most operators are struggling. We’ve provided subsidies, but more support may be needed. The meeting will guide our next steps,” Wahab added.
The commissioner also warned against illegal land reclamation and unapproved developments, stressing that such acts worsen flooding. “We’ve begun enforcement and will remove all illegal reclamations without drainage clearance or Environmental Impact Assessment,” he said.
