LAGOS, Nigeria – A truck driver has been arrested after a fatal brake failure killed a pedestrian along Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the arrest on Sunday, identifying the vehicle as a Mercedes Benz truck with registration number KRD 466 XJ.
LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq said the driver lost control near Osborne Expressway traffic light junction, ramming into a pedestrian and killing the victim instantly.
“Our officers secured the area immediately to prevent secondary crashes and ensure smooth traffic flow,” Taofiq explained.
The suspect was handed to security personnel from Dolphin Estate and Ikoyi Police Divisions for interrogation. The deceased’s body was taken to a mortuary in Ebute Metta pending identification.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki called the crash “tragic and preventable,” urging truck operators to conduct regular mechanical checks.
“This incident underscores the importance of routine maintenance, especially for heavy-duty vehicles,” he said, warning that negligence continues to endanger lives on Lagos roads.
