OGUN, Nigeria – The Ogun State Police Command and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) have pledged to strengthen cooperation to protect petroleum facilities, gas installations and other critical energy infrastructure against theft, vandalism and economic sabotage.
The commitment followed a meeting on Tuesday, between the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, and the NMDPRA’s Ogun State Coordinator, Atilola Simeon Akinyemi, alongside members of the authority’s management team.
The meeting took place at the police command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta. Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi said discussions focused on improving coordination around petroleum distribution facilities and compressed natural gas (CNG) installations.
Ojajuni said the command would strengthen intelligence sharing and collaboration with relevant agencies to safeguard energy infrastructure across the state.
He noted that protecting these facilities was important for investor confidence, industrial productivity and economic growth, particularly in Ogun State, a major industrial centre. The commissioner warned against activities that threaten public safety and economic stability, including petroleum infrastructure theft, vandalism and other illegal operations.
He assured the NMDPRA delegation that the police would provide appropriate security support to regulatory agencies carrying out their lawful duties.
Akinyemi said the authority’s responsibilities under the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 required effective collaboration with security agencies to protect investments, enforce industry standards and address operational challenges. He commended the police command for its existing support and called for closer cooperation to tackle security and regulatory concerns affecting petroleum-related activities.
Ojajuni also referred to his previous experience with the former Department of Petroleum Resources in Yola, Adamawa State, as he stressed the importance of law enforcement in preventing economic sabotage and protecting legitimate business operations.
