ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has launched an Ebola awareness campaign in Akwa Ibom State, urging residents to observe preventive measures and report possible symptoms following reports of a confirmed case in the Federal Capital Territory.
The state director of the agency, Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, launched the campaign on Thursday, calling on residents to maintain good personal hygiene and avoid direct contact with the blood and other bodily fluids of anyone suspected of having Ebola.
He also warned residents against touching the bodies of people suspected to have died from the disease, stressing the importance of following public health guidance when a death is linked to a possible infection.
Mkpoutom advised anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding to seek prompt medical assessment, particularly if they may have been exposed to the virus.
He cautioned residents against circulating unverified reports about Ebola, saying accurate information was essential to preventing panic and protecting communities.
“Accurate information and public cooperation are essential to preventing panic and protecting communities,” he said.
The agency urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, youth organisations and other stakeholders to support public enlightenment efforts and encourage residents to follow guidance from health authorities.
Ebola is a serious viral disease that can spread through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who is symptomatic, or with contaminated materials. Safe handling of bodies and infection-prevention measures are particularly important because transmission can occur during contact with infected people and deceased patients.
Symptoms can resemble those of other illnesses, so symptoms alone cannot confirm an Ebola infection. People who believe they may have been exposed should contact health authorities promptly and follow their instructions rather than attempting to diagnose or treat themselves.
