LAGOS, Nigeria – An angry mob has set a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus ablaze after a reported fatal collision involving a motorcyclist at Ogolonto Bus Stop along Ikorodu Road in Lagos State.
The incident reportedly occurred after the motorcyclist was crushed to death, triggering an outburst of anger in which some members of the crowd allegedly attacked the bus driver.
Police officers and officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) intervened and rescued the driver, who was reported to be unharmed.
The deceased was reportedly riding alone when the collision occurred. However, the circumstances surrounding the crash, including how the motorcycle and bus came into contact, had not been independently established as of the time of filing this report.
A video circulating on social media showed the BRT bus engulfed in flames by the roadside, with fire consuming much of the vehicle. The identity of the deceased, the extent of the damage to the bus and whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the incident remained unclear. No official account of the crash or the subsequent violence was available at the time of publication.
The incident highlights the risks that can arise when fatal road crashes trigger mob violence, potentially endangering lives and complicating emergency response efforts.
While the circumstances of the collision must be established through a proper investigation, attacking a driver or setting a vehicle ablaze can expose bystanders and emergency responders to additional danger.
The incident also raises concerns about the destruction of public transport assets following road crashes, particularly when crowds resort to violence before authorities can establish responsibility.
