LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversions on the Independence Bridge from Friday, October 16, to Sunday, October 18, to allow the Federal Ministry of Works to carry out asphalt repairs on the busy route.
The repairs will begin at night on Friday and continue throughout Saturday and Sunday, both during the day and at night, according to a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Works on Thursday.
The government said the work would require partial closures of sections of the bridge, with at least one lane remaining open at a time to accommodate motorists travelling along the affected routes.
The Lagos State Government urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead of the weekend and consider alternative routes where necessary to avoid delays. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will deploy officers to manage traffic, enforce the designated diversions and minimise disruption throughout the repair period.
In the statement, Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi appealed to motorists to remain patient, obey traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic officials.
The government said the measures were intended to facilitate the repair work while allowing road users to reach their destinations with as little disruption as possible.
The Independence Bridge is an important road link in Lagos, where traffic congestion can affect commuters, commercial transport operators and businesses relying on the movement of goods across the city.
Motorists travelling through the affected area during the repair period are advised to allow additional time for their journeys and follow instructions from LASTMA officers.
The ministry did not identify specific alternative routes in the information provided, making it important for motorists to check official traffic updates before setting out.
