PLATEAU, Nigeria — Twenty people have been killed and five others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Hawan Kibo-Jos route in Plateau State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.
The crash occurred at about 3:32 p.m. after Sopp Waterfalls when a truck descending Hawan Kibo Hill reportedly suffered brake failure and lost control.
The FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.
Ohaeri said 25 people were involved in the crash, including 23 males and two females. All 20 people who died were males, while the five injured victims comprised three males and two females.
Four Vehicles Involved in Plateau Crash
According to the FRSC, four vehicles were involved in the crash. They were a Howo Sino truck with registration number AGL 525 YN, a Toyota Corolla with registration number AB 129 M, a Toyota Bummer bus operated by Yankari Express and a motorcycle whose registration details were unavailable.
The injured victims were taken to Ryom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital for treatment. The bodies of those who died were deposited at the mortuary of Jos University Teaching Hospital.
FRSC Begins Crash Investigation
FRSC rescue personnel cleared debris from the highway and restored traffic flow after the crash.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
He also directed the Corps’ crash investigation team to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Mohammed urged motorists, particularly commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators, to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance and roadworthiness.
He also called for speed control and responsible driving to reduce the risk of road crashes.
