OGUN, Nigeria – The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a bill establishing a legal framework for the safe termination of pregnancy in specified circumstances, with the legislation aimed at reducing maternal morbidity and mortality and promoting reproductive health.
The Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Bill, 2026, was passed on Thursday during plenary presided over by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The bill, H.B. No. 036/OG/2026, was considered clause by clause after the House adopted the report of its Committee on Health, presented by the committee chairman, Wahab Haruna. The lawmakers subsequently approved the bill for third reading.
The Assembly directed its Clerk and Head of Legislative Service, Sakiru Adabakin, to transmit a clean copy of the legislation to Governor Dapo Abiodun for assent.
The bill seeks to provide a legal framework for the termination of pregnancy in legally permitted circumstances, while addressing maternal health and reproductive health concerns.
The Assembly also considered four other bills, including legislation on gender balance in political and public offices, victims’ rights and the prevention and prohibition of human sacrifice.
Meanwhile, the Assembly resolved to convert the removal from office of former Deputy Speaker of the Ninth Legislature, Dare Kadiri, to resignation following his appeal.
Presenting the committee’s report, Chief Whip Omobola Bakare said the decision was not intended to revisit the circumstances surrounding Kadiri’s removal or apportion blame.
She said the request was aimed at allowing the former lawmaker to bring that period of his public service to a “peaceful and dignified conclusion.”
The safe termination of pregnancy bill will now be presented to Governor Abiodun for consideration and possible assent.
