ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s grid-connected power plants utilised 86 per cent of their available generation capacity in August, with Afam_2, Kainji_1 and Egbin_1 recording the highest load factors, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
NERC disclosed this in its August 2026 Operational Performance Factsheet released on Wednesday. The report showed that the plants had an average available capacity of 4,758 megawatts, while average utilisation stood at 4,102MW.
Afam_2 recorded the highest load factor at 99 per cent, followed by Kainji_1 at 98 per cent and Egbin_1 at 96 per cent. The figures indicate that the three generating units operated close to their available capacity during the month.
Afam_2 had an average available capacity of 265MW and utilised about 262MW, while Kainji_1 had 352MW available and utilised 345MW. Egbin_1 had 347MW available and utilised 333MW, according to the reported figures.
NERC’s operational performance data provides an assessment of how grid-connected generating plants performed and how much of their available capacity was utilised during the period.
The August figures come as the commission continues to publish monthly operational data on Nigeria’s power generation fleet, providing a measure of plant availability and utilisation across the national grid.
The performance of individual generating units, however, represents plant utilisation during the reporting period and does not by itself indicate uninterrupted electricity supply to consumers across the country.
