ABUJA, Nigeria — The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has opened a new professionalisation pathway for about 250,000 serving teachers without professional teaching qualifications, allowing them to obtain formal training and teaching licences while remaining in service.
The council announced the initiative on Friday as it backed the Federal Government’s Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP), designed to help unqualified serving teachers acquire recognised professional credentials.
“Candidates who passed the prescribed ATPP examination will be eligible to sit for the Professional Qualifying Examination, PQE, organised by TRCN before they are registered as qualified teachers and issued licences,” the council said in a statement.
The six-month programme will offer two training routes: the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) for graduates from non-education disciplines and the Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) for candidates from the National Diploma cadre.
Participants will spend four months undertaking blended learning through self-paced online modules, virtual facilitation and assessments.
This will be followed by two months of supervised teaching practice in their schools.
The programme fee will cover certification and licensing for participants who successfully complete the requirements.
