LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-LASU) has declared a total and indefinite strike over what it describes as the government’s failure to implement the 2025 ASUU/FGN Agreement.
The ASUU-LASU strike took effect after the union’s congress on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, where members resolved to begin industrial action following months of unsuccessful engagement with the government.
In a statement signed by the Secretary of the ASUU-LASU Steering Committee, Thanny Nooem, and the Coordinator, Oluwaseun Babalola, the union said it had pursued what it described as “patient and constructive engagement” without securing a resolution to the outstanding issues.
“This unfortunate and avoidable action has become necessary due to the continued failure of the Government to address the Union’s longstanding agitation over the implementation of the 2025 ASUU/FGN Agreement,” the statement said.
ASUU-LASU said its central demand is the “full domestication and implementation of the 2025 ASUU/FGN Agreement”.
“The strike shall be total and comprehensive until there is a satisfactory resolution of the issues in dispute,” it said.
The development threatens to disrupt teaching and other academic activities at Lagos State University, including its Ojo campus and other university activities, pending further developments.
The strike declaration comes amid wider disputes between ASUU branches and government authorities over implementation of the 2025 agreement. Other university branches have also taken or threatened industrial action over unresolved issues connected to the agreement.
ASUU-LASU maintained that its action was intended to press for implementation rather than abandon negotiations, saying the dispute could be resolved if the outstanding issues were addressed.
The ASUU-LASU strike is expected to remain in place until the union reaches a satisfactory resolution with the government on the issues in dispute.
