EDO, Nigeria – Severe Benin-Warri Expressway flood has stranded scores of motorists for days after torrential rains submerged sections of the highway, trapping vehicles and disrupting movement along one of southern Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors.
A video circulating on social media on Monday shows a dark-coloured car almost completely swallowed by muddy floodwaters, with only its roof visible as bystanders wade through the water in a desperate effort to rescue the occupants.
The footage captures several residents climbing onto the partially submerged vehicle while others push from different directions in an attempt to free those trapped inside. Nearby, long queues of cars, buses and articulated trucks remain stationary as floodwaters render the expressway impassable.
Travellers say the flooding has brought journeys to a standstill, forcing hundreds of commuters to remain stranded for hours and, in some cases, days as heavy rainfall and deteriorating road conditions cripple traffic along the critical highway linking Edo and Delta states.
The video also shows piles of sand and gravel scattered across damaged sections of the road, highlighting the extent of the infrastructure failure caused by persistent rainfall.
Road users’ express frustration over the recurring condition of the Benin-Warri Expressway, saying poor maintenance and inadequate drainage have repeatedly exposed motorists to danger during the rainy season.
Many call for urgent government intervention to rehabilitate the failed portions of the highway and improve drainage infrastructure to prevent future flooding.
As of Monday, efforts to recover the submerged vehicle and clear the resulting traffic backlog continue, while commuters appeal for immediate repairs to restore safe passage on the strategic federal road.
