ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has renewed its appeal to Nigerians to enrol in health insurance, describing coverage under the scheme as critical protection against the rising cost of healthcare.
In a notice published on Thursday via its official X account, the Authority said health insurance provides financial security by ensuring individuals and families can access essential healthcare services without suffering severe financial hardship.
“Your NHIA card is a shield against the financial shock of illness, giving you and your family access to essential healthcare when you need it most,” the agency stated.
The Authority highlighted the services available to beneficiaries, including outpatient consultations, laboratory investigations, hospital admission, inpatient care, antenatal services, childbirth, postnatal care, preventive healthcare and surgical procedures.
NHIA stressed that health insurance should be viewed as a long-term investment rather than something to consider only during illness.
“Health insurance is not something to consider only when you are sick. It is a deliberate decision to protect your health, your income and your family’s future. Don’t wait for a medical emergency before taking action,” the Authority added.
The agency encouraged Nigerians to enrol by visiting the nearest NHIA office or completing registration through its online platform.
According to NHIA, expanding enrollment remains essential to achieving universal health coverage, reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses and improving access to affordable healthcare services nationwide.
