ADO EKITI, Nigeria – The Ekiti State Government has commenced a full-scale investigation into the persistent offensive odour reported in parts of Ado Ekiti, assuring residents that authorities are working to identify the source and eliminate any environmental or public health risks.
The Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, urging residents to remain calm while investigations continue.
According to him, the government has deployed coordinated surveillance, environmental inspections and scientific assessments across affected areas to determine the cause of the unpleasant smell.
“The surveillance and inspection exercises have so far identified activities capable of contributing to environmental nuisance and foul odours, including indiscriminate sewage disposal, poor waste management practices and the discharge of decomposed materials into public channels,” Olatunbosun said.
He revealed that enforcement actions had already been taken against offenders, including the prosecution of violators, sealing of affected premises, removal of environmental nuisances and fumigation of impacted locations.
The commissioner also disclosed that the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources had carried out air and gas quality analyses to obtain scientific evidence on the nature and possible source of the odour.
According to him, the government is collaborating with relevant agencies and environmental experts to ensure a comprehensive investigation and appropriate remedial action.
“The situation is being closely monitored. The state government is working with relevant agencies and experts to ensure that the matter is properly investigated and appropriate measures taken to normalise the situation,” he said.
Olatunbosun appealed to residents to avoid spreading rumours or unverified information that could create unnecessary panic.
He encouraged anyone with useful information that could assist the investigation to contact the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources through its official hotline: 08145571085.
