Cross River, UBEC Launch Climate Change Education Programme for Public Basic Schools

CALABAR, Nigeria – The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), in partnership with the Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has launched a climate change education programme aimed at equipping pupils and teachers in public basic schools with practical knowledge and skills to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development.
According to a bulletin released by the Cross River State Government on Thursday, the programme will integrate climate change education, biodiversity conservation, waste management and environmental sustainability into teaching and learning in public basic schools.
Representing the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Mrs Etcheri Ansa described the intervention as a reflection of the Federal Government’s commitment to preparing young Nigerians for the realities of climate change through quality basic education.
She said the programme was developed through extensive consultations with government agencies, development partners, climate experts and civil society organisations, leading to the development of national implementation guidelines.
Ansa disclosed that UBEC has introduced a web-based monitoring portal to track implementation across participating states, while the African Centre for Environment, Climate, Agriculture and Rural Development (ACEARD) will provide technical support, monitoring and capacity building.
She urged education stakeholders to work collaboratively to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Cross River SUBEB, Mrs Fedelia Okpo Ene, represented by Mrs Caroline Ana, described the programme as a strategic investment in environmental education and sustainable development.
She said the initiative would help create greener, healthier and safer learning environments while nurturing environmentally responsible citizens.
