LAGOS, Nigeria – The Ogun State Government plans to transform its Safety Office into a fully empowered Safety Commission as part of efforts to strengthen industrial safety, improve regulatory compliance and reduce workplace accidents across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, announces the proposal during the opening of a training workshop for safety personnel organised by the Ministry of Environment in Abeokuta. He says the initiative forms part of the ministry’s 2026–2028 Strategic Safety Transformation Agenda, designed to ensure Ogun’s rapid industrial growth is supported by robust safety systems.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Kafayat Lawal, Oresanya warns industries against sacrificing workplace safety in pursuit of economic expansion.
“The future of industrial safety cannot depend solely upon periodic government inspections. Rather, it must be built upon continuous risk assessment, proactive leadership, competent personnel, measurable performance indicators and a deeply rooted culture of prevention.”
According to him, Ogun’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading industrial hubs demands stronger systems for workplace safety, environmental protection, emergency preparedness and risk management.
“Economic growth without safety is unsustainable. Development without resilience is vulnerable.”
“Our objective is to establish measurable safety performance benchmarks across industries, identify emerging risks before they result in incidents and support organisations in developing practical solutions that strengthen operational resilience.”
