LAGOS, Nigeria — Two firefighters have been hospitalised after collapsing while battling a fire that engulfed part of a residential building in the Ketu-Ikosi area of Lagos State on Sunday, although no fatalities or civilian injuries were recorded.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the fire broke out at about 6:31 a.m. on the top floor of one of two adjoining three-storey residential buildings at 11 Ademola Taiwo Street, Ketu-Ikosi.
In a statement issued by the agency’s spokesperson, Olawale Afolabi, emergency responders from LASEMA’s Tiger Squad and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service quickly contained the blaze before it spread to neighbouring buildings.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire was triggered by an electrical surge from a prepaid meter installed on the building’s balcony before spreading to the upper floor.
“The incident involved one of a pair of twin three-storey residential buildings. Our responders immediately commenced coordinated firefighting operations to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures,” Afolabi said.
He disclosed that two firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service collapsed during the operation and were immediately evacuated by LASEMA to the Trauma Centre for treatment.
According to the agency, both officers are in stable condition and responding well to medical care.
LASEMA confirmed that no residents were injured and no deaths were recorded during the incident.
The agency said dampening and recovery operations remain ongoing to eliminate residual heat, secure the affected building and determine the full extent of the damage.
He also advised the public to remain calm during emergencies, cooperate with emergency responders and promptly report incidents through the state’s emergency toll-free lines.
