ABUJA, Nigeria – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to rescue Nigerians still in captivity, saying security operations should extend beyond high-profile kidnapping cases.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party praised security agencies for rescuing abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State but insisted that victims in other parts of the country deserve the same level of urgency.
The party cited pupils abducted in Borno State and more than 100 residents kidnapped in Kaiama, Kwara State, saying many have remained in captivity for months without similar rescue outcomes.
According to the ADC, every kidnapping incident should receive equal attention regardless of where it occurs or the profile of the victims.
“The success recorded in Oyo should become the standard for every rescue operation across the country,” the party said.
The ADC argued that while successful rescue missions are commendable, the government’s broader priority should be preventing abductions from occurring in the first place.
It said the true measure of progress against insecurity is ensuring Nigerians can attend school, travel and conduct their daily activities without fear of being kidnapped.
The party also called for improved intelligence gathering, stronger coordination among security agencies and more effective strategies to address the root causes of insecurity.
It maintained that national efforts against kidnapping would only be complete when every abducted Nigerian is safely reunited with their families.
The statement comes amid continuing concerns over rising cases of kidnapping for ransom and attacks on schools and rural communities across parts of Nigeria.
