Governor Dapo Abiodun
ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – Ogun emergency medical services rescued more than 500 road crash victims and transported over 1,000 pregnant women to health facilities within the past six months as the state expands emergency healthcare delivery, the Ogun State Government has said.
The Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, disclosed this on Friday during a sensitisation walk marking the 2026 World Ambulance and Paramedics Day in Abeokuta.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Kayode Oladehinde, Coker described ambulance personnel and paramedics as “silent heroes” whose commitment continues to save lives through rapid emergency response.
She said the state government has significantly strengthened its emergency medical system under Governor Dapo Abiodun, expanding the ambulance fleet from four to 30 ambulances strategically deployed across the state’s 20 local government areas.
“In addition, we have deployed 80 tricycle ambulances to improve emergency response in rural communities, as well as two boat ambulances stationed in Ipokia and Ogun Waterside Local Government Areas to serve riverine communities,” she said.
According to the commissioner, emergency medical teams evacuated more than 500 road traffic crash victims, transported over 250 patients to primary healthcare centres, referred about 100 patients to secondary health facilities and assisted more than 1,000 pregnant women experiencing obstetric emergencies within the last six months.
She attributed the achievements to sustained investment in emergency healthcare infrastructure, logistics and personnel.
Coker urged residents to utilise the state’s 24-hour Emergency Call Centre by dialling 08112000033 whenever medical emergencies occur.
Earlier, the Deputy Director of Ogun State Ambulance and Emergency Services, Festus Adetonwa, assured residents that trained paramedics remain on standby around the clock to provide pre-hospital emergency care and transport patients safely to appropriate health facilities.
