DG, NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has urged state governments to strengthen emergency preparedness and response under the Nigeria Health Security Reform Implementation Initiative (NHSRII).
Unveiling the new State Emergency Preparedness and Response Action Plan on Monday in Abuja, Director-General, NCDC, Dr Jide Idris said local readiness is critical as public health threats often begin in communities.
“We can’t respond effectively to viruses if states lack capacity,” Idris warned. “Preparedness must start at the community level, where outbreaks first occur.”
Supported by the World Bank, the NHSRII framework provides a roadmap for all 36 states and the FCT to improve coordination, financing, and epidemic response. It also aligns subnational strategies with national standards.
Dr Idris explained that each state would adapt the plan to its local context. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach,” he added.
Forum of Health Commissioners Chair, Dr Oyebanji Filani commended NCDC’s collaborative drive, saying it will help states detect early warning signals and prevent outbreaks.
“This engagement ensures preparedness doesn’t wait for epidemics,” Filani said. “States remain committed to building stronger surveillance and response systems.”
