KOGI, Nigeria – The death of a primary school teacher in Kogi State has sparked outrage after police confirmed that she allegedly died from injuries sustained during an assault by the father of one of her pupils.
The deceased, Maryam Usman, 30, taught at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Okpo District of Olamaboro Local Government Area.
According to the Kogi State Police Command, the incident occurred on June 18 when a man identified as Abdullahi Ishaka allegedly entered the school with two women and attacked the teacher over disciplinary action taken against his child.
Police spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, on Sunday said the victim was initially taken to a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo because of the severity of her injuries.
She later died on June 25.
“The suspects fled before police officers arrived, and efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest all those involved,” Afusat said.
The police said the suspects would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department upon arrest for further investigation and prosecution.
The incident has generated widespread public condemnation, with many Nigerians demanding stronger protection for teachers and tougher sanctions against violence in schools.
Afusat assured residents that the command remained committed to securing justice.
“Investigations are ongoing, and we will ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” she said.
The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of teachers and the increasing cases of violence against education workers in schools across the country.
