A crashed trailer
UMUAHIA, Nigeria – A trailer carrying iron rods crashed into the perimeter wall of the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia early Thursday after suffering an apparent brake failure along the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Expressway.
The accident occurred near Finbarrs Road close to the Abia State High Court, causing heavy traffic congestion and partially blocking one of the city’s busiest roads.
Witnesses said the truck developed a mechanical fault while climbing a hilly section of the road before rolling backwards uncontrollably.
The driver, who declined to disclose his identity, said the incident occurred around 2 a.m.
According to him, the vehicle suddenly lost compression during the ascent, making it impossible to maintain control.
The truck subsequently rammed into the perimeter fence of the Federal Medical Centre, damaging part of the hospital’s boundary wall.
The accident left a section of the expressway obstructed, leading to severe traffic delays during the morning rush hour as motorists struggled to navigate the affected area.
Emergency responders and traffic officials later arrived at the scene to manage traffic and facilitate recovery operations.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not confirmed any casualties or injuries.
Efforts were still underway to remove the vehicle and restore normal traffic flow.
The Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Expressway serves as a major transport corridor connecting parts of Abia and Akwa Ibom states and regularly records heavy vehicular movement.
Road safety experts have repeatedly warned about the dangers posed by mechanical failures involving heavy-duty vehicles, particularly on steep sections of major highways.
Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are expected to continue.
