ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting greater participation of women in diplomacy and international affairs, describing female diplomats as critical drivers of peace, development and global cooperation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the commitment in a statement issued on Wednesday to mark the global celebration of women in diplomacy.
The ministry said Nigerian women continue to make significant contributions in bilateral and multilateral engagements, helping to strengthen the country’s influence across international institutions.
According to the ministry, Nigerian female diplomats have played strategic roles within the United Nations, the African Union and ECOWAS, as well as diplomatic missions across different regions of the world.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs joins the global community in celebrating the remarkable achievements, resilience, and leadership of women in diplomacy,” the statement said.
The ministry noted that increasing numbers of women now occupy senior diplomatic positions, including ambassadors, directors and heads of international organisations.
It described the development as evidence of growing commitment to gender equality and equal opportunities within Nigeria’s foreign service.
The ministry also called for stronger partnerships involving government agencies, development partners, civil society organisations and private institutions to support mentorship and leadership programmes for women entering diplomacy.
Officials said encouraging more women to participate in international affairs would strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic capacity and contribute to more inclusive global governance.
