LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit during the weekend impounded 278 commercial motorcycles during a renewed enforcement operation against illegal okada activities across major highways and restricted routes in the state.
The week-long crackdown, carried out under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018, targeted several locations across Lagos as authorities intensified efforts to enforce the state’s motorcycle restrictions and tackle criminal activities linked to illegal operations.
Chairman of the Task Force, CSP Adetayo Akerele, said the exercise was designed to strengthen security, protect lives and maintain public order.
The operation covered Ikorodu, Agric Bus Stop, Festac First Gate, Mazamaza, Iyana School, Iyana-Iba, Idimu Road, Egbeda, Kola Bus Stop, Iyana Ipaja, Ikotun Roundabout, Ajaiye in Ojokoro and Berger Bus Stop.
Akerele said several operators were arrested for violating the ban on commercial motorcycle operations along prohibited routes.
“Some were found using motorcycles to transport illicit substances and hazardous items such as petroleum products and gas. Others were conveying school children and toddlers in unsafe conditions on major roads,” he said.
According to the agency, the enforcement drive follows an earlier operation conducted weeks ago and aligns with the renewed commitment of the Lagos State Police Command to maintain security across the state.
The task force chairman said the operation had restored order in many affected areas and improved compliance with transport regulations.
“We will not cow or fold our arms and allow people of criminal intent to overrun Lagos or surrender to their illegalities,” Akerele said.
