ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Ministry of Education has begun a two-day training programme for State Project Monitoring Officers (PMOs) as part of preparations for the second phase of its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative.
The workshop, which opened in Abuja on Friday, is aimed at strengthening monitoring, compliance and programme delivery ahead of Cohort 2 implementation.
Speaking at the opening session, the National Coordinator of Special Programmes under the Minister of Education, Adebayo Onigbanjo, described the training as essential to sustaining the gains already achieved under the programme.
He said the officers play a key role in monitoring accredited training centres, ensuring compliance with programme guidelines and maintaining quality standards.
Mr. Onigbanjo said TVET remains one of the flagship programmes under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), designed to equip Nigerians with practical and employable skills.
He added that biometric registration and direct payments to beneficiaries were helping to improve transparency and accountability within the programme.
According to him, more than 1,600 accredited training centres are currently participating across nearly all local government areas in the country.
The National Project Monitoring Officer for TVET and IDEAS, Odewunmi Olatunji, said the workshop would allow officials to review lessons learned from the first phase and address implementation challenges before the next cohort begins.
Representatives of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and biometric service providers are also participating in the discussions.
