KANO, Nigeria – The NNPC Foundation has donated a cutting-edge 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, Kano, in a major boost to specialised healthcare services across Northern Nigeria.
The advanced diagnostic equipment was officially inaugurated and handed over to the hospital on Thursday.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, said the intervention underscores the company’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery through strategic social investments.
represented by the Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, Mrs Emmanyella Arukwe, Ojulari said the initiative aligns with efforts to strengthen critical sectors including healthcare, education and energy.
“Strengthening the hospital’s diagnostic capacity will significantly improve service delivery and reduce the burden of accessibility and affordability on patients,” he said.
Executive Vice-President, Business Services, Sophia Mbakwe, noted that the MRI machine would improve diagnosis of complex orthopaedic, neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.
Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Isa Nurudeen, described the donation as a historic milestone.
“The MRI machine being commissioned today is the most modern in Northern Nigeria. It was manufactured in 2025 and will greatly enhance our capacity to deliver quality specialised healthcare services,” he said.
Nurudeen explained that patients previously travelled long distances for MRI services, resulting in treatment delays and increased medical costs.
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir-Yusuf, represented by Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran, commended the intervention and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to healthcare infrastructure development.
The hospital said the new MRI system would significantly improve diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning and patient outcomes across multiple medical specialties.
