LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to tackle street begging and homelessness, rescuing 45 vulnerable persons in a coordinated operation aimed at improving public safety, environmental order and social welfare.
The enforcement exercise targeted major locations across the state, including Oshodi, Agege and CMS.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Wednesday disclosed that 22 beggars and destitute persons were apprehended in Oshodi and Agege, while another 23 individuals, including nine children, were rescued at CMS.
“Clearance operations are also ongoing at Admiralty Way, Lekki, and Addo Road in Ajah for a cleaner and safer Lagos,” Wahab said.
The commissioner revealed that environmental enforcement activities over the past year resulted in the arrest of 931 offenders for waste management violations.
Meanwhile, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, said the state rescued 1,315 vulnerable persons during the review period and prosecuted 459 beggars through the Mobile Court.
“The state government remains committed to restoring dignity to vulnerable persons through rehabilitation, counselling, vocational empowerment and reintegration into society,” Ogunlende stated.
Authorities said the intervention forms part of broader efforts to address social challenges, reduce public nuisance and improve the quality of life across Lagos.
