ABUJA, Nigeria – The Senate has called for urgent national action to tackle rising indiscipline among Nigerians, warning that the trend is fuelling insecurity, criminality and the erosion of societal values.
The upper chamber on Wednesday urged the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to intensify public enlightenment campaigns and develop programmes aimed at restoring discipline, civic responsibility and respect for lawful authority.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Dachung Pam Mwadkon on the growing culture of indiscipline across the country.
Speaking during debate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described indiscipline as one of the root causes of banditry, crime and social disorder.
“Discipline should start from the home. Nigerians obey laws abroad but often disregard the same standards at home,” Akpabio said.
He stressed the need for a renewed national orientation strategy targeting children and young people.
Presenting the motion, Senator Mwadkon highlighted growing concerns over traffic violations, vandalism, political intolerance, breaches of protocol, disregard for authority and misuse of social media.
According to him, these behaviours are weakening institutions, undermining public trust and threatening national development.
“If left unchecked, the growing culture of indiscipline could further undermine national security, economic growth, education and democratic governance,” he warned.
The Senate urged the NOA and relevant agencies to intensify efforts to promote patriotism, civic values and responsible citizenship nationwide.
