IBADAN, Nigeria – Armed gunmen have abducted Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, the younger sister of former Minister of Power and APC governorship aspirant, Adebayo Adelabu, alongside her 12-year-old twin sons in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The victims, identified as Peter and Paul John-Paul, were reportedly kidnapped at about 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday in the Challenge area of Ibadan South-West Local Government Area while travelling to school.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers intercepted the family’s vehicle before forcing the occupants away.
A resident, Adewale Kabiru, who witnessed the incident, said the operation was swift.
“The gunmen blocked the road, forced them out and took them away. People around were shocked and scared because the whole incident lasted only a few minutes.”
The family confirmed the abduction in a statement issued by Adelabu’s media aide, Femi Awogboro.
According to the statement, Mrs. John-Paul is the youngest of five children of Mrs. Olufunmilayo Aduke Adegoke Adelabu and recently retired from the Central Bank of Nigeria and First Bank Pension Custodian before relocating to Ibadan with her children.
The family said security agencies have commenced investigations and rescue efforts aimed at securing the victims’ safe return and apprehending those responsible.
“We remain hopeful and confident in the ability of security operatives to rescue the victims safely,” the statement said.
While expressing concern over the incident, the family appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information that could undermine ongoing rescue operations.
As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the abduction.
The incident adds to growing concerns over rising cases of kidnapping and insecurity across parts of Nigeria.
