ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched an upgraded Speed Limiting Device Web Monitoring Portal, a digital platform aimed at tightening enforcement of speed regulations and curbing road traffic fatalities across Nigeria.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed described the innovation as a “landmark shift” in the Corps’ use of technology to reduce crashes.
“Speeding remains one of the leading causes of road traffic deaths in Nigeria. With this upgraded portal, we can track compliance more effectively and ensure that motorists respect speed limits,” Mohammed said in a statement on Friday.
The system will monitor usage of speed limiting devices while providing real-time data to enforcement officers. According to the FRSC boss, the technology allows swift detection of violations, improves accountability among fleet operators, and strengthens overall highway safety.
“Our ultimate goal is to save lives and make Nigerian roads safer for all users,” Mohammed added.
The initiative forms part of FRSC’s broader strategy of integrating digital solutions into traffic management. Road safety experts say the system could significantly reduce the human and economic toll of crashes, which cost Nigeria billions annually in medical bills, loss of productivity, and infrastructure damage.
With the new portal, authorities believe Nigeria is taking a decisive step toward global best practices in traffic regulation and safety enforcement.
