OGUN, Nigeria – No fewer than 11 people were killed on Sunday night after a Toyota vehicle plunged off the Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State, authorities said.
The crash occurred along one of South-West Nigeria’s busiest highways, raising renewed concerns over reckless driving and road safety compliance.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, the accident involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ, which reportedly somersaulted before falling off the bridge.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State FRSC Command, Afolabi Odunsi, said all 11 occupants of the vehicle died in the crash.
“The incident involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ, which somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping the occupants inside as the doors locked upon impact,” Odunsi said in a statement.
“All 11 people on board, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, lost their lives in the crash.”
He said operatives from the FRSC Itori Unit Command were immediately deployed to the scene alongside local residents to recover the victims.
“FRSC personnel, with help from the local community, dismantled the vehicle to recover the bodies. The deceased have been moved to the State Specialist Hospital Morgue in Ifo,” he added.
Preliminary investigations, according to the FRSC, indicate that overloading and driving under the influence may have contributed to the accident.
Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to exercise caution while travelling on the Lagos-Abeokuta corridor, especially at night.
Road safety experts have repeatedly warned that speeding, reckless overtaking and impaired driving remain major causes of fatal crashes across Nigerian highways.
