DAMATURU, Nigeria – Civil servants in Yobe State have demanded the immediate restoration of suspended leave grants and full overhead funding, warning that worsening economic conditions are eroding morale and service delivery.
The demands were presented on Friday during a May Day rally organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.
State NLC Chairman Mukhtar Tarbutu criticised the suspension of annual leave grants and the reduction of overhead allocations to 50 per cent.
“The current increasing cost of goods and services requires an urgent upward review of allowances,” he said.
Workers also called for a 100 per cent increase in furniture allowance, as well as salary structure reforms for health workers and paramilitary agencies.
Despite the grievances, labour leaders acknowledged efforts by Governor Mai Mala Buni, including the implementation of the new minimum wage, civil service recruitment and subsidised loan schemes.
The Head of Service assured workers that their demands would be forwarded for government consideration.
The protest reflects broader national concerns over inflation, wage erosion and the rising cost of living, which continue to strain Nigeria’s public workforce.
