LAGOS, Nigeria – Regulators intensify crackdown on counterfeit alcohol in Lagos after uncovering a multi-million-naira illicit production network, raising fresh concerns over public health and regulatory enforcement.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Wednesday confirms it seizes counterfeit alcoholic beverages worth N350 million during intelligence-led raids across Lagos Island and the Trade Fair Complex.
“Acting on credible intelligence, enforcement operatives recovered over 1,800 cartons of adulterated products,” the agency states.
Investigators uncover makeshift factories equipped with mixing tanks, filtration systems, and branded packaging materials used to replicate popular drinks.
Industry data indicates illicit alcohol accounts for nearly 40 per cent of Nigeria’s market, driven by high costs and weak enforcement. Experts warn that consumption of adulterated alcohol poses severe health risks, including poisoning and organ damage.
NAFDAC urges consumers to patronise authorised outlets and report suspicious products as nationwide enforcement intensifies.
