NMA Faces Leadership Crisis as Delegates Converge Over Election Dispute

ABUJA, Nigeria – A leadership crisis deepens within the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) as over 200 delegates prepare for an emergency meeting in Abuja on Wednesday amid disputes over candidate disqualifications.
The controversy centres on decisions linked to the association’s Annual Delegates Meeting elections, sparking backlash from key stakeholders.
Chairman of State Chairmen Forum Oreyemi Ifedayo on Monday says the emergency meeting becomes necessary after failed reconciliation efforts.
“The Committee of Past Presidents has resolved that these disqualifications must be reversed,” he states.
The committee warns that the situation could trigger instability within the association.
Observers say tensions escalate as NMA President Bala Audu is urged to reconsider the decision.
“It is regrettable that interventions have been disregarded,” Ifedayo adds.
Delegates are expected to deliberate on restoring order and ensuring a fair electoral process.
“All arrangements are in place, with over 200 attendees confirmed,” he says.
Analysts warn that unresolved disputes could weaken cohesion within the medical body and affect its advocacy role.
The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape the association’s leadership and direction in the coming months.
