MAKURDI, Nigeria – A member of the Benue State House of Assembly, Godwin Edoh, warns that persistent insecurity in Agatu Local Government Area could threaten the conduct of the 2027 general elections if urgent measures are not taken.
Speaking to newsmen on Monday, Edoh says ongoing attacks have displaced residents and rendered several communities inaccessible, raising concerns about voter participation and electoral logistics.
“If insecurity persists, it will be difficult for the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct elections in affected areas,” he states.
The lawmaker explains that many rural settlements have been abandoned over the past four years, forcing residents to relocate to safer locations such as Obagaji.
He adds that displaced persons can no longer sustain livelihoods like farming and fishing, deepening humanitarian challenges.
Despite the presence of security forces, Edoh notes that large parts of Agatu remain unsafe.
He also highlights the destruction of critical infrastructure, including schools, markets and healthcare centres.
Edoh commends Governor Hyacinth Alia for directing security agencies to intensify operations, expressing hope that stability will be restored.
He calls for long-term solutions, including housing support for displaced persons.
Residents urge authorities to create conditions that will allow safe return and normalcy.
Security experts warn that prolonged displacement could undermine democratic processes and deepen instability ahead of future elections.
