ABUJA, Nigeria – Medical laboratory scientists raise alarm over a controversial bill before the National Assembly, warning it could destabilise Nigeria’s healthcare system and compromise patient safety.
The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria criticises Executive Bill HB:2701, which seeks to amend the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria Act.
AMLSN President Casmir Ifeanyi on Saturday described the proposal as “a dangerous regression disguised as reform,” arguing it weakens professional standards.
“A regulatory system driven by politics rather than expertise is institutional sabotage,” he says.
At issue is the restructuring of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria board, which would expand political influence and include non-specialists.
The association warns this could erode independence and undermine compliance with global standards such as ISO 15189.
It also opposes provisions linking the council with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, describing the move as “structural overreach.”
Experts note laboratory diagnostics guide up to 70% of clinical decisions, making regulatory integrity critical.
The group urges Bola Tinubu and lawmakers to halt the bill and consult stakeholders.
“This is about patient safety, not professional rivalry,” Ifeanyi says.
