ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu expands Nigeria’s clean transport programme to include electric vehicles, broadening efforts to cut fuel costs and emissions.
The initiative, now renamed the Presidential CNG and Electric Vehicles Programme, will coordinate gas-powered and electric mobility nationwide.
Announced in Abuja by presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga on friday, the policy targets infrastructure, financing and accessibility.
Tinubu directs the immediate rollout of affordable vehicle conversion kits. “Kits must be within reach of ordinary Nigerians,” the directive states.
The programme will partner with CreditCorp Nigeria and lenders to ease financing barriers.
Authorities also plan mobile refuelling units to bridge infrastructure gaps while expanding fixed stations nationwide.
Officials say Nigeria’s gas reserves offer a near-term solution, while electric vehicles represent the future of mobility.
The move signals a dual strategy—lowering transport costs now while preparing for long-term energy transition.
