Education Minister Tunji Alausa during ASUU agreement signing
Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government of Nigeria unveils a nationwide entrepreneurship certification programme across 14 universities, signalling a major shift toward innovation-driven education and job creation.
Speaking in Abuja on Friday, Education Minister, Dr. Maruf Alausa says the Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Business Incubation Certification (EIBIC) will transform students into job creators.
“Today marks not just the launch of a programme, but the beginning of a new paradigm in Nigeria’s education system,” he says.
The initiative begins in institutions including the University of Lagos and Ahmadu Bello University, with expansion to all federal universities by 2027 and all tertiary institutions by 2028.
Alausa warns that rapid technological change threatens employability. “If we do not prepare our young people adequately, we risk widening the gap between education and employability,” he says.
The programme embeds entrepreneurship across disciplines, equipping students with business planning, financial literacy and innovation skills. It also aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s economic agenda.
Interest is already high. “36,000 young entrepreneurs applied,” Alausa reveals, referencing a new student venture capital grant with 63 beneficiaries.
Vice-Chancellor of University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, calls the initiative “a transformative leap” linking education to market needs.
The programme runs alongside academic studies, guiding students from idea development to enterprise creation before graduation.
