OGUN, Nigeria – Authorities in Ogun State move to enforce a ban on roadside trading along the busy Sango Tollgate corridor, citing rising safety concerns and accident risks.
The Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps orders traders to vacate the Sango Tollgate stretch of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway and relocate to approved markets.
Ota divisional commander Salau Hammed on Monday says the directive aims to prevent avoidable deaths and injuries linked to roadside hawking.
“The directive was necessary to prevent accidents and loss of lives, especially of traders who sell goods on the road,” he says.
Officials warn that vendors operating near fast-moving traffic face heightened risks, particularly when heavy-duty vehicles experience brake failure or sudden stops.
TRACE also cautions motorists and commercial operators against unsafe practices, including indiscriminate parking and passenger loading along the highway.
Hammed urges compliance, stressing that enforcement will be sustained in collaboration with security agencies to restore order along the corridor.
Authorities say the crackdown forms part of broader traffic management efforts to reduce congestion and improve road safety in high-density areas.
