ABUJA, Nigeria – The Department of State Services arrests a 26-year-old Rivers State resident for allegedly claiming responsibility for, and issuing threats linked to, a recent attack targeting former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Security sources identify the suspect as Udeme Monday Stephen, who is apprehended after posting threats on his X account shortly after gunshots are fired at the African Democratic Congress secretariat and the Benin residence of John Odigie-Oyegun in Edo State.
Obi, Oyegun, former Nigerian Bar Association president Olumide Akpata, and other party leaders were present in Benin at the time of the incident.
According to security officials on Monday, Stephen claims responsibility for the attack in an online post and threatens further violence, prompting the DSS to launch a covert investigation using forensic digital analysis.
A senior source says the suspect, a teacher at a private secondary school in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, is tracked and arrested within hours.
“He is currently in custody and will be charged to court after investigations are concluded,” the source says, adding that the agency acted swiftly to neutralise any imminent threat.
