ABIA, Nigeria – The Abia State Government has commenced the full rollout of the Abia Connect Card, a cashless payment platform designed for commuters using the Green Shuttle Bus Service, in a move aimed at modernising public transportation and strengthening accountability across the sector.
The initiative, implemented through the Ministry of Transportation under the administration of Alex Otti, is expected to deliver a seamless and technology-driven commuting experience for residents across the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, through the Abia Ministry of Information’s official channels, the government described the programme as a major milestone toward building a digital, transparent and efficient transport ecosystem.
According to the statement, the Abia Connect Card — also known as the “Abia State Card” — eliminates inconveniences linked to cash payments such as delays, disputes over change and revenue leakages.
“We are intentionally moving away from the hassles of cash transactions. With the Abia Connect Card, commuting becomes as simple as a single tap. It is efficient, reliable, and designed to ensure that our public transport system works effectively for everyone,” the statement read.
The government disclosed that the first card is currently being issued free of charge at designated Green Shuttle terminals and authorised agent locations across Aba and Umuahia, with applicants required to present their ABSSIN or register through the Abia Pay portal if they do not have one.
After loading funds — subject to a ₦50 top-up charge — commuters are expected to tap the card on payment devices when boarding, with an audio confirmation signalling successful payment.
The card does not expire and funds remain valid indefinitely, while fares include ₦800 for Aba–Umuahia trips, ₦1,000 for Umuahia–Ohafia routes and a flat ₦150 rate for intra-city services.
