ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s biosafety regulator moves to dispel fears over genetically modified seeds as part of a push for food security.
The National Biosafety Management Agency holds a sensitisation session in Minna on Saturday, engaging farmers and traditional rulers on the safety and benefits of GMO crops.
NBMA Director-General Bello Bawa says misinformation fuels resistance to biotechnology. “Many farmers still misunderstand modern biotechnology because of false narratives, especially on social media,” he says.
Bawa stresses that approved GMO seeds undergo rigorous scientific testing lasting more than a decade and are safe for humans, animals and the environment.
State officials back the initiative, describing biotechnology as essential for higher yields and improved nutrition.
