LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos plans a major capacity boost for its Red Line rail service as transport authorities prepare to deploy 24 additional coaches by the third quarter of 2026.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) on Wednesday says the expansion will involve three new train sets, each with eight coaches, strengthening service along the busy Oyingbo–Agbado corridor.
“As part of our long-term strategy to enhance capacity, comfort and reliability, we expect delivery and operationalisation by Q3 2026,” says LAMATA spokesperson Kolawole Ojelabi.
The announcement follows passenger complaints about faulty air-conditioning systems on some coaches. LAMATA apologises for the inconvenience, saying technical teams are already addressing the faults to restore comfort.
The Red Line’s first phase was inaugurated in February 2024 by President Bola Tinubu and operates under a track-sharing agreement with the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
Transport analysts say the additional coaches could significantly ease congestion and improve commuter experience on one of Lagos’s most critical rail corridors.
