IBADAN, Nigeria – The University of Ibadan emerges as Nigeria’s leading institution in law and medical sciences in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026, reinforcing its position on the global academic stage.
According to the rankings published on the Times Higher Education website and reviewed on Saturday, UI places within the 301–400 band globally in both law and medical and health subjects, outperforming all other Nigerian universities.
In the law category, UI appears alongside the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, placing Nigeria among 425 ranked law schools worldwide. The assessment measures performance across teaching quality, research strength, international outlook and key legal disciplines.
“The Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026 reveal the world’s top universities for law,” THE says, noting that the evaluation spans constitutional, criminal, corporate and international law, among other areas.
Stanford University tops the global law ranking for teaching excellence.
In medicine and health, UI again leads Nigerian institutions, while the University of Lagos follows in the 401–500 band. Other Nigerian universities, including Ahmadu Bello University, University of Benin and Bayero University, rank within the 601–800 band.
Oxford University claims the global number one position in medical and health sciences, with THE highlighting its strength in teaching, research and industry collaboration.
“This year, we evaluated 1,230 universities from 102 countries using 18 rigorous performance indicators,” THE says.
Additional Nigerian institutions such as Babcock University, Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Ilorin appear in the 801–1000 range, while Lagos State University and the University of Port Harcourt fall within the 1001+ category.
The results underscore both UI’s academic strength and the widening performance gap within Nigeria’s university system.
