ABUJA, Nigeria – The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) calls on Nigerians to heighten vigilance in markets, churches and other crowded public spaces as part of renewed efforts to strengthen national security.
In a public advisory issued on Friday and shared through its official social media channels, the DHQ urges citizens to remain alert in areas with heavy human traffic and to promptly report suspicious behaviour or individuals to nearby security agencies.
The military says situational awareness among the public remains a critical layer of defence in preventing crime and disrupting potential security threats before they escalate.
According to the advisory, everyday environments such as places of worship, transport hubs and commercial centres are particularly vulnerable, making collective alertness essential to safeguarding lives and property.
The DHQ stresses that cooperation between civilians and security operatives significantly improves response times and enhances intelligence gathering.
“Public vigilance is a force multiplier,” the advisory notes, adding that early reporting enables security agencies to act decisively and minimise risks.
The military authority explains that the alert follows growing concerns over security challenges in densely populated areas nationwide. It forms part of broader efforts by the armed forces and other agencies to involve citizens more actively in early threat detection and prevention.
Nigerians are also encouraged to take safety advisories seriously and comply with instructions from security personnel during emergencies.
Security analysts say the appeal underscores a shift toward community-based security, recognising civilians as essential partners in maintaining public safety amid evolving threats.
